Ex-South Carolina quarterback Brandon McIlwain has decided on his next school. He’s heading west.

McIlwain will have to sit out the 2017 season because of NCAA transfer rules.

He was 62-118 passing for 600 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in 2016. He also ran for 127 yards and scored two touchdowns. He lost out on the South Carolina starting job to Jake Bentley by the end of the season and was likely headed for a backup role in 2017 had he stayed with the Gamecocks.

Judging by his picture, the two-sport athlete will also play baseball at Cal. McIlwain was the No. 13 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2016.

When he’s eligible at Cal, McIlwain figures to compete with quarterbacks Ross Bowers and Chase Forrest. The two are currently competing to be the Bears’ starter in 2017 after Davis Webb’s departure.
