With a couple of weeks under his belt, Jarred Cosart is likely starting to get a little more comfortable around the Marlins clubhouse. More importantly than the knowledge of where things are located, is success on the mound.
A candidate for the Marlins to trade for: Adrian Beltre, whose enjoying another fine season with the Rangers. Beltre has already cleared waivers and is a can be dealt to any team in baseball at this point. With the Rangers season faltering badly, they have been open to trade talks on their slugging third baseman.
Shortly after the clock struck midnight back home on the East Coast last night, the Marlins turned into pumpkins and lost a 5-4 decision in 13 innings to the Rockies -- the last-place Colorado Rockies. Steve Cishek game up a game-tying tape-measure home run in the ninth to Corey Dickerson before Sam Dyson lost it in the 13th on a Dickerson RBI single.
The Marlins scored 13 runs on 16 hits in a win over the Rockies Friday, but organizationally speaking, that wasn’t the best offensive night.
The fourth ever regular season series between the Marlins and Angels, which opens Monday night at Angels Stadium, features two of the game’s premier young outfielders and possibly this year’s American and National League Most Valuable Players.
The Marlins lost to the Rockies late Saturday in 13 innings. It would have been 12 if not for Adeiny Hechavarria. With two out and runners at the corners, Justin Morneau hit a pop into short left-center. With Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna both playing deep, Hechavarria was the only fielder with a shot at it. He sprinted to the ball and made a backhanded, overhead catch before tumbling to the ground.
On Friday, Rockies manager Walt Weiss' opening comments on the Marlins' offense went about as far as saying Giancarlo Stanton belonged in the circus. Nine innings later, Marcell Ozuna made sure Weiss included him in that high-flying act by finishing 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored.
When Marlins manager Mike Redmond saw the ball come off Justin Morneau's bat, all he could think was "this thing is over." Morneau's bloop in the 12th inning of Saturday night's 5-4, 13-inning loss was hardly picturesque, but it was the type of ball that could only mean trouble.
Sometimes, one wrong pitch to the right batter is all it takes to flip the entire perception of a player. Right-hander Steve Cishek entered Saturday having allowed five earned runs in seven August opportunities.
