FIFA extends Tacecchio's racism ban worldwide

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -- FIFA has extended worldwide the six-month ban of Italian football federation president Carlo Tavecchio for a racist comment during his election campaign. UEFA issued the ban a month ago after Tavecchio, a long-standing executive in Italian football, was elected president in August despite causing a stir over a reference to bananas when discussing the presence of foreign players in Italy. FIFA says Tavecchio is ''ineligible for any position as a FIFA official for a period of six months'' starting from Oct. 7. But he'll be able to attend FIFA's election congress in May after the ban expires. Tavecchio apologized for the remark and said it was misunderstood. The Italian federation's internal prosecutor dropped his inquiry over the comment, enabling Tavecchio to continue operating as president.
