Going into his third season at the NFL level, Miami Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi should be able to prove that last season was not a fluke and that he is the Dolphins future for the running back position. He’s young, he has the size and speed and he is not afraid to drop his shoulder and run you over. If he stays on the field and the Dolphins can draft an offensive lineman to complete the starting offensive line, Miami will show the league that have their franchise back in Ajayi.

Ajayi, who was a product of Boise State was drafted in the fifth round in the 2015 draft. Running backs that are selected in the later rounds are usually questioned on if they can bring an impact. Based on last season, we all saw Ajayi break through to be one of the top backs in the league.

2015 vs. 2016

In 2015, Ajayi gained a total of 187 rushing yards and one touchdown in nine games. He also added on seven catches for 90 yards. Fast forward to his second season and we saw a new and improved Jay Ajayi. In 15 games, he racked up 1,272 yards and eight touchdowns while adding on 27 catches for 151 yards.

At 23 years old, expect Ajayi to keep running wild and he can have the same season like last year if not better. The Dolphins want to Ajayi to keep producing and a big factor that could help them have Ajayi keep producing is picking up an offensive lineman in the NFL Draft to take over the offensive guard position. With Laremy Tunsil moving from left guard to his natural position of left tackle, this leaves an empty slot at the left offensive guard position.

How to keep Ajayi at this level

This draft is not loaded with offensive lineman. With the Dolphins having the number 22 pick in the draft, they could draft offensive lineman Forrest Lamp out of Western Kentucky. Lamp played left tackle at Western Kentucky but will transition to a guard and he would be a perfect fit for the Dolphins offensive line.

A problem is that the Dolphins may be too far back to grab Lamp at #22. Could he fall into the twenties? Most definitely, anyone can. If he is still on the board when Miami is on the clock and they are serious about keeping Ajayi where he is, go with Lamp.
