Greenville, N.C. -- Senior forward Maurice Kemp scored a game-high 23 points, leading East Carolina to a 74-63 victory over Norfolk State on Saturday at Williams Arena.
Kemp made 9 of 13 field-goal attempts. He also grabbed six rebounds for the Pirates (7-3), who improved to 7-0 at home this season. Kemp led three players who scored in double figures for the Pirates. Senior guard Miguel Paul had 19 points and eight assists. Junior forward Robert Sampson had 12 points and nine rebounds.
Junior forward Pendarvis Williams had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans (6-8), who lost their third in a row. Freshman forward Rashid Gaston came off the bench to post 12 points and seven rebounds.
Norfolk State trailed by one midway through the opening half, but East Carolina took a 46-38 lead into halftime. The Spartans cut East Carolina's lead to 48-44 when Rashid Gaston dunked with 11:51 remaining, but the Pirates pulled away with a 12-0 run over the next 5 minutes.
East Carolina shot 49 percent from the field and made 21 of 26 free throws. Norfolk State shot 35.8 percent and converted only 11 of 17 free-throw attempts.
