The Duchess of Cambridge may not have been performing bridesmaid or Maid of Honour duties at sister Pippa Middleton’s wedding to James Matthews on Saturday, but she was definitely on mum duty.

Princess Charlotte, who has just celebrated her second birthday, and her big brother Prince George, who turns four in July, had pivotal roles in their aunt’s big day with Charlotte acting as a flower girl and George an adorable page boy.

But though their royal cutenesses undoubtedly stole the show in their gorgeous bespoke outfits by Pepa & Co, it was Kate’s A-grade mum skills that helped keep the little ones’ in check.

As any parent of smalls will understand, children and weddings are not always the easiest of combinations, but Kate looked totally unfazed as she took charge of George and Charlotte and the rest of the pre-school wedding party.

From gently shushing the tiny bridal party as they waited to enter St Mark’s Church, Englefield, to carefully shepherding the adorable boys and girls down the church path with their sweet flower baskets intact, the Duchess of Cambridge certainly earned herself a glass of champers at the wedding breakfast.

At one point Kate was seen having a serious chat with Prince George outside the church, and though no one really knows what prompted the talk, it is believed that it was because he had stood on Aunty Pippa’s £40,000 Giles Deacon wedding dress. Yikes.

The Duchess was also photographed bending down to talk to Charlotte during one touching mama/daughter moment, with Charlotte looking utterly sweet in a floral headband and holding her tiny flower basket.

The Duchess had previously expressed concern about how George and Charlotte would behave on the big day. At the Queen’s garden party earlier this week, Kate told one guest that she was “a bit worried” about how her tiny duo would behave at the ceremony.

“[Kate] said that they were all really looking forward to her sister’s wedding at the weekend but she was a bit worried about how her children might behave. She said she was hopeful that they would be good but you never know at that age,” Partygoer Andrew Bates had said.

But the Duchess needn’t have worried as her little ones and their pals were on their best behaviour. Though it was reported that George may have thrown something of a tantrum after being pictured looking a little sulky, royal experts actually believe the little prince had stumbled as he’d got out of the car. And though his mother had gently scooped him up it took George a few moments to get over his fall. Bless.

In the past, the majority of the chatter about a royal-ish wedding would have revolved around Kate’s choice of outfit, but this time, though she looked fantastic in a blush Alexander McQueen number, the Duchess attracted far more attention about how well she handled her childcare duties.

And it wasn’t just her own children she was looking after, Kate also took charge of the rest of the under-5 bridal party which included bridesmaids Countess Philippa Hoyos, Lily French, Avia Horner, while the pageboys were Casimir Tatos, Edward Sebire and William Ward.

One little boy proved a little tricky as he was spotted sticking his tongue out at one moment and was also photographed with his fingers in a v-sign, although a royal expert revealed that actually the little boy was actually counting on his fingers.

Having to watch over multiple small children at a fancy event, making sure they perform their duties and no one spills chocolate on their expensive outfits is no mean feat and the Duchess certainly handled her task as kiddie-wrangler with complete composure.

But then again we wouldn’t expect anything less.
