Drew Brees passes Dan Marino for third on career passing list

A short, 8-yard pass to Coby Fleener midway through the second quarter of New Orleans Saints-New York Giants didn’t have much of an impact on the game, but it marked a milestone in NFL history. With that insignificant toss, Saints quarterback Drew Brees passed Dan Marino’s total of 61,361 yards for third on the NFL’s all-time list.

Brees has a long way to go to climb the ladder any further. He’ll end the day about 10,400 yards behind Brett Favre in second and another 100 yards behind Peyton Manning in first. Given that Brees has totaled at least 4,388 yards every season in New Orleans, he’ll be on pace to break the career yardage record early in the 2018 season … if, of course, he stays healthy and his production doesn’t drop off a cliff over the next 30 games.

Tom Brady stands in fifth place on the all-time list with 58,028 yards, and could catch Marino later this year. John Elway is sixth with 51,475 yards and unlikely to add more to that total anytime soon. After Brady, the next two active leaders are Eli Manning (44,394 yards coming into Sunday) and Ben Roethlisberger (43,295 yards).
