Landon Donovan, the United States' all-time leading goal scorer, was left off the roster for the team's upcoming visits to Scotland and Austria.
According to U.S. Soccer, Donovan is unavailable due to injury. He hurt his left ankle two months ago but since then appeared for both the U.S. national team and his club side, the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer.
U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann did not call up any players from the four teams still alive in the MLS playoffs. However, he did choose three players whose clubs were knocked out last week: Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez and three members of the Seattle Sounders, defender Brad Evans and forwards Clint Dempsey and Eddie Johnson.
One of the top U.S. players, midfielder Michael Bradley, is back with the national team for the first time since Sept. 6 after recovering from an ankle injury.
The United States plays friendlies Friday at Glasgow, then Nov. 19 at Vienna.
"We are excited about the group we have coming in and the big opportunity to finish the year on a high note," Klinsmann said in a statement released by U.S. Soccer. "We want to use these games to prove a point and see that our players are continuing to improve as we build towards the World Cup. The results in MLS wound up fitting in with our roster plans, so we didn't need to call in any guys who are still in the playoffs. There are some injuries issues that now give other players the chance to step up."
