The Miami Dolphins and cornerback Sean Smith are far apart in contract negotiations, the Palm Beach Post reported Saturday.
Smith, a five-year cornerback, is due to be an unrestricted free agent in March. If a deal is not worked out, the Dolphins could place a franchise tag on him.
Smith is reportedly asking for a six-year, $43 million contract, similar to what the Tennessee Titans gave Jason McCourty last year.
It is not clear how much the Dolphins are willing to offer Smith.
The Dolphins were 27th in the NFL in defending the pass in 2012.
