LOS ANGELES -- After a brief foray back into folly, the Los Angeles Dodgers resumed their winning ways with a 4-3, tight-rope victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.
On Friday night, Philadelphia busted out the bats and pounded the Dodgers for a 16-1 win, snapping Los Angeles' season-high six-game winning streak.
Hanley Ramirez made sure it wouldn't happen again, even if there was a little drama.
After two gaffes allowed the Phillies to tie the score at 3 in the top of the ninth -- a Yasiel Puig fielding error on a Michael Young single put Young on second and a Matt Kemp throwing error on a Jimmy Rollins fly ball two batters later allowed Young to score -- Los Angeles responded in the bottom of the inning.
Ramirez opened the ninth with a single off reliever Justin De Fratus for his third hit of the night and 20th since June 19. Andre Ethier followed two batters later with a walk. Then A.J. Ellis drove a 2-2 offering to right field and Ramirez beat the throw for the winning run.
The Dodgers shortstop struck early as well, driving a Cliff Lee pitch deep over the center-field wall for a three-run homer in the second inning and also had a double. Ramirez is 19-for-39 since June 19 and leading the league in batting average, hits and RBIs since his 11-game hitting streak began.
The ninth-inning outfield flubs blew yet another quality start by Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu, who allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out six. He has now gone six or more innings in all but one of his starts.
Lee allowed just two other hits -- one to Puig, giving him hits in 21 of 25 games, and one to Adrian Gonzalez -- as he went seven innings and allowed three runs in his second straight strong yet fruitless start.
Chase Utley hit two solo home runs off Ryu and Ben Revere added three hits for the Phillies (39-43), who dropped yet another series, their sixth series loss in nine since the end of May.
Utley continued his hounding of the Dodgers, sandwiching Ramirez's three-run homer in the bottom of the first with solo home runs in the first and third.
Utley started the series 7-for-10 with three home runs and four RBIs and upped his average more than 20 points in three games.
NOTES: Dodgers RHP Josh Beckett will have season-ending surgery to relieve a pinched nerve in his neck, which has caused numbness in his pitching arm. Beckett will have his top rib removed to relieve pressure on the nerve-deemed thoracic outlet syndrome -- which has caused him discomfort for much of his disappointing season. Beckett is 0-5 on the year with a 5.19 ERA. ... RHP Carlos Zambrano was placed on the disabled list with right shoulder discomfort by the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Zambrano was signed to a minor-league deal by the Phillies in May. ... Los Angeles purchased the contract of relief pitcher Jose Dominguez, optioning Peter Moylan to Triple-A Albuquerque to clear room. Dominguez was 1-0 with a 2.60 ERA for Double-A Chattanooga with 28 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings after serving a 25-game suspension for a violation of minor league drug policies. Moylan went 1-0 with a 6.35 ERA in 10 games and allowed five runs on Friday night against the Phillies. ... Utley last had a multi-homer game in July 2011.
