SAN DIEGO -- A six-run spurt in the second inning sparked the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 8-1 rout of the San Diego Padres on Saturday night before an announced crowd of 31,336 at Petco Park.
The Diamondbacks (16-14) jumped all over starter Clayton Richard (0-4), who had had never lost to them, and coasted the rest of the way. Richard was tagged with seven runs (five earned), seven hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Meanwhile, Patrick Corbin (4-0) provided Arizona with another quality outing, limiting San Diego to a run and five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in seven innings. Corbin has gone at least six innings in all five of his starts. The left-hander has yet to give up more than two runs in a game this season.
The lone run that Corbin allowed came on a home run by Chris Denorfia in the seventh.
A.J. Pollock homered, had three RBIs and scored three times for the Diamondbacks, who snapped a four-game losing streak and beat the Padres (12-18) for only the fourth time in the past 11 outings. Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs with two sacrifice flies.
Josh Wilson and Cliff Pennington started the scoring in the six-run second with RBI singles for a 2-0 lead with no outs. Corbin followed with a sacrifice that Richard fielded and threw wide of first and down the right-field line for an error, allowing Wilson to score for a 3-0 advantage.
Pollock hit a ground-rule double to right center to score Pennington and Corbin for a 5-0 advantage before Goldschmidt added a sacrifice fly to drive in Pollock to make it 6-0.
In the fourth, Pollock homered over the wall in right center to increase the lead to 7-0.
NOTES: Arizona shortstop Didi Gregorius was activated from the seven-day disabled list. Gregroius suffered a mild concussion when he was hit in the head with a pitch by Josh Outman of the Rockies on April 26. To make room, Arizona optioned outfielder Alfredo Marte to triple-A Reno. ... Left fielder Carlos Quentin, who was batting .204 with two homers and nine RBIs entering Saturday's game, returned to the Padres' lineup after being held out Friday because of a sore right knee. Quentin appeared as a pinch hitter in Friday's win but struck out looking in the eighth inning. ... The Diamondbacks' errorless streak came to an abrupt end after 11 games, one short of tying the club record, when the Padres announced a scoring change from Friday's game. The miscue was charged to center fielder Gerardo Para, whose throw to home in the seventh inning bounced past catcher Miguel Montero and allowed Kyle Blanks, who singled, to advance to second.
