Deshaun Watson continues to do great things in Houston community

It’s probably not too early to call Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson the NFL’s next big star.

On the field, he has been remarkable and is becoming a household name. He already had a head start as a superstar at Clemson, but what he’s done since taking over as Texans starter has made him one of the NFL’s biggest stories this season. And if that was all, he’d get as many accolades as he could handle.

But Watson is doing everything he can to endear himself in the Houston community.

He donated his first game check to three cafeteria workers at the Texans’ stadium who were affected by Hurricane Harvey. According to the Texans, Watson helped furnish 176 homes that were damaged by the hurricane, through Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity is special for Watson, because in 2006 his family got a new home through that organization, with an assist from former Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Warrick Dunn.

A lot of negative things have been said lately about NFL players, but the fact is that a vast majority of them are good people. If someone like Watson (or Jason Pierre-Paul, who spent time with a young boy fighting cancer last week and did a sack dance they practiced during last week’s game, or Dak Prescott, another young star quarterback doing good work in the Dallas community) just played football and that’s it, there’s nothing wrong with that. They’re not required to do anything further than that. When Watson gives to help Houston residents who need help after Hurricane Harvey, or teammate J.J. Watt helps raise a ton of money for hurricane relief, it’s because they want to use their platform to help people and make a difference in their community. There are many, many examples of NFL players doing that in their cities. It’s commendable.

Even though Watson has a lot on his plate as a rookie quarterback expected to carry a franchise to new heights, he’s still donating his time and money to help the community. It seems like the Texans are in pretty good hands with their new quarterback, on and off the field.
