David Ross stomps a Disney-themed jive on 'Dancing with the Stars'

Another week of “Dancing with the Stars” means another performance from baseball’s favorite grandpa, David Ross. And it was Disney Week, to boot! Last week, Ross said that his kids would probably have a say in his song selection. Would he dance to a song from “Frozen?” Or would he go old-school and do a song from “The Little Mermaid” or “The Lion King?”

None of those were right. Ross went new — very new. Ross and his partner Lindsay Arnold did a jive to a song from the forthcoming movie “Cars 3,” and knowing how much kids love the “Cars” movies, I’m guessing his kids probably did play a part in his song selection. David and Lindsay were dressed in bright orange racing outfits and jived their brains out to “Ride” by ZZ Ward.

As always, Ross looks like he’s having the time of his life. It really feels like he could be your next door neighbor who’s constantly saying “Look at all this cool stuff I get to do! I can’t believe I’m doing this!” And he handles the jive well enough. He got in all his steps, which is always a concern with a faster dance (as opposed to something a little more deliberate like last week’s Viennese waltz). But unfortunately for David, having the time of your life isn’t part of the judges’ scoring.

The main complaint that the judges had this week was that Ross was “flat-footed” in his steps. Instead of staying on his toes and bouncing from step to step, Ross would land on a flat foot at the end of his steps, which takes away the routine’s springiness. As for the scores, well, it finally happened this week. With weaker couples watching at home on their couches after being eliminated, Ross no longer has a cushion. A 29/40 is definitely respectable, but the rest of the couples were so good that his score ended up being the worst of the night. (To read about how the rest of the couples did on Disney night, check out YahooTV’s full recap of Week 5 of “Dancing with the Stars.”)

It really seems like it couldn’t matter less to David Ross. He certainly cares about the show and doing well, but he’s mostly concerned with having a great time. And he’s absolutely accomplished that. He’s also aware of how he’s been doing and where he stands. Here’s what he said in his pre-routine video package:

“[My mind is telling me] Now were in this, so it’s time to work your tail off! … But mentally and physically [the jive] is hard. I’m grinding. This is like August in baseball! … The competition is very stiff. There’s no weak dancer. [Laughing] It may be me. My brain keeps saying, ‘ You’re old! You’re an idiot!”

The worst part of Ross and Arnold possibly being eliminated on next week’s show is that we’ll no longer have weekly check-ins with everyone’s favorite baseball grandpa. After finding out that Ross’ brain has been calling him an idiot, I want to know what his brain is saying about things all the time. Once his time on DWTS is over, he should consider starting a podcast so the world won’t be deprived of great David Ross quotes like that one.

And since Ross’ time on DWTS could very well be over next week, he might want to think about that soon.
