Dale Earnhardt Jr, NASCAR's most popular driver and the son of seven time champion Dale Earnhardt, will retire at the end of the 2017 NASCAR season.

It was announced by Hendrick Motorsports this morning that Earnhardt, the winner of 26 races and NASCAR's most popular driver 14 times, will retire after the 2017 season comes to a close.

While Earnhardt has not offered an official comment (there will be a press conference this afternoon), one has to suspect that multiple concussions and missing nearly the entire 2016 season had a role in this decision. Earnhardt has previously said that he will donate his brain when he passes away for concussion research.

Earnhardt, who will turn 43 in October, will finish the season in the number 88 Chevrolet for Hendrick. The team did not announce a replacement for Earnhardt, and doesn't seem to be in a rush to do so. We'll know more details this afternoon when Hendrick and Earnhardt hold their press conference
