The Chicago Cubs activated reliever Carlos Marmol before Monday's game against the San Diego Padres and sent reliever Rafael Dolis to the minor leagues.
The move came one day after Dolis was moved out of the closer's role, the Chicago Tribune reported. He had struggled in his last two outings.
Dolis hit a batter with the bases loaded Saturday and followed that outing by giving up two runs without getting an out on Sunday. He is 2-4 with a 5.68 ERA and four saves and two blown save chances for the struggling Cubs.
Marmol returned earlier than anticipated. He was placed on the DL on May 12 because of a strained right hamstring.
After starting the season as the team's closer, Marmol likely will pitch in middle relief for the time being.
Manager Dale Sveum apparently is considering Shawn Camp and James Russell for closing duties.
