Cowboys could look to extend Sean Lee this year
The Dallas Cowboys were cap-strapped this year but things have loosened up since the extension for quarterback Tony Romo was brokered and it will get easier in 2014 when they’re no longer being penalized by the NFL for breaking rules that were not in place during the uncapped year.
Before the season is over the team will likely consider signing talented linebacker Sean Lee, who is entering the final year of his deal, to an extension. That is what vice president Stephen Jones said, according to the Dallas Morning News.
“Historically, we look at guys going into the last years of their contracts,” Jones said. “Sean is going into the last year of his contract, so that’s probably something we’ll look at.”
Lee has to remain durable. He missed half of last season with torn ligaments in his toe. He’s had knee injuries in the past. But when he’s healthy he is an elite defender and will likely thrive in the new scheme being installed by Monte Kiffin and Rod Marinelli.
Lee isn’t the only player the Cowboys will want to lock up into the future. Wide receiver Dez Bryant and fellow linebacker Bruce Carter could be in line for pay days as well.
“Everybody affects everybody,” Jones said.
