Coppin State's Patrick Cole led a balanced scoring attack with 21 points to lead the Eagles over visiting Cheney 98-78 Saturday in a non-conference basketball game.
Three other Eagles scored in double figures -- including Michael Murray, who scored 14 -- as they won their first game of the season after losing four straight. It was the season-opener for Cheyney, an NCAA Division II school.
Coppin State, of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, led by as many as 22 points early in the second half, but that lead was cut to 79-72 with 5:37 left in the game. The Eagles scored on consecutive possessions to take an 84-72 lead and Cheney did not cut the Coppin State lead under double-digits again.
Cole is a freshman guard from Newark, N.J., who has averaged 17 points per game to lead the Eagles in scoring.
Coppin State next hosts Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., ET. The Eagles next have a tough challenge looming, as they go to play at No. 1 Indiana on Dec. 1.
