College football roundup: Caragher named San Jose State coach

University of San Diego coach Ron Caragher has been named the new head football coach at San Jose State, the school announced Monday.

Caragher, who will sign a five-year contract, replaces Mike MacIntyre, who left to take the Colorado job last week.

Caragher succeeded Jim Harbaugh as the San Diego coach when Harbaugh became head coach at Stanford. San Diego, an FCS school, was 44-22 in its six years under Caragher and was co-champions of the Pioneer Football League four times.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to lead the San Jose State football program," Caragher said in a release. "Having grown up in the San Jose area, I understand the rich tradition of Spartan Football - it's lineage of great coaches, terrific teams, and outstanding players."

--Big-play wide receiver Stedman Bailey will leave West Virginia after the Pinstripe Bowl to enter the NFL draft, coach Dana Holgerson said Monday.

Bailey, a redshirt junior, finished the regular season with 106 receptions for 1,501 yards and 23 touchdowns. He is ranked 14th among receiver prospects by NFLDraftScout.com.

The Mountaineers also will lose wide Receiver Tavon Austin, ranked No. 3 at his position by NFLDraftScout.com., and quarterback Geno Smith, who was a high-school teammate of Bailey

--NFL draft prospects Zack Martin and Louis Nix will return to Notre Dame next year.

Coach Brian Kelly announced Monday that the two would forgo a shot at the 2013 draft. The top-ranked Fighting Irish are preparing for their BCS championship matchup with Alabama.

Martin, a redshirt junior offensive tackle, and Mix, a redshirt sophomore nose tackle, have been mainstays for Notre Dame the past two seasons.

--New York Giants offensive line coach Matt Rhule was officially introduced as Temple's new head football coach on Monday.

Rhule replaces Steve Addazio, who left to take the head coaching job at Boston College. Rhule was the Owls' co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach in 2011 under Addazio.

Temple's hiring of Ruhle had been reported over the weekend.

--New Tennessee coach Butch Jones filled the final spot on his nine-man staff with the addition of Zach Azzanni as receivers coach.

Azzanni is the latest assistant to leave Wisconsin after Bret Bielema departed to take the head-coaching job at Arkansas.

--Missouri announced that co-offensive line coach Josh Henson has been promoted to Missouri's offensive coordinator.

--Reserve Ohio State receiver Verlon Reed has left the team, the Columbus Dispatch reported. Reed had one catch for 13 yards in the first game of the season and was used mostly on special teams.
