College football roundup: Boyd will return to Clemson next season
Although a lot of underclassmen are giving up remaining college eligibility to enter the NFL Draft, some big names are returning.
Clemson junior quarterback Tajh Boyd announced Wednesday that he will return to school for his senior season, bypassing the NFL for the chance to possibly play for a national title.
Boyd had a productive 2012 season, leading Clemson to 11 wins, including a comeback victory over LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. He finished his junior year with 46 total touchdowns (36 passing, 10 rushing), completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 3,896 yards and added 514 yards on the ground.
Boyd was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and would have been an early round pick had he decided to enter the 2013 NFL Draft. However, the allure of unfinished business led Boyd to return to school.
---Alabama offensive tackle D.J. Fluker has decided to enter the 2013 NFL Draft and will give up his final season of college eligibility, TideSports.com reported.
The school has not yet confirmed that Fluker will turn pro. NFLDraftScout.com rates Fluker as the No. 7 offensive tackle prospect and the No. 40 prospect overall.
---Syracuse confirmed reports from earlier in the week with an announcement Wednesday that Scott Shafer has been officially named the Orange's head coach.
Shafer, 46, served as Syracuse's defensive coordinator for four seasons under Doug Marrone, who left last week to take the head-coaching job with the Buffalo Bills.
