The San Diego Chargers released quarterback Kevin O'Connell on Saturday.
O'Connell was signed July 29 after Kyle Boller decided to retire just after signing. The Chargers needed a quarterback in camp while Charlie Whitehurst was out with a strained MCL. Whitehurst returned Saturday.
O'Connell did not get into Thursday's game against Green Bay as rookie Jarrett Lee played the final three-plus quarters of the Chargers' 21-13 win.
O'Connell was a third-round pick of New England in 2008 out of San Diego State.
