Free agent Dwight Freeney was scheduled to visit the San Diego Chargers on Wednesday.
According to multiple reports, Freeney was set to be in San Diego after the Chargers lost 2012 first-round pick Melvin Ingram to a torn left anterior cruciate ligament in a non-contact drill in Tuesday's offseason team activity practice.
Freeney was the 11th overall pick in 2002 and has 107.5 career sacks. He was released by the Colts and wasn't an ideal fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker -- the same scheme the Chargers plan to operate -- last season. Despite the transition, Freeney had five sacks.
He could be signed to play a situational role. The Chargers lost their top two pass rushers, Shaun Phillips and Antwan Barnes, in free agency.
