Oakland Athletics slugger Yoenis Cespedes was added Tuesday to the American League squad for the Home Run Derby next week during All-Star week activities.
Cespedes will join Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles, Prince Fielder of the Detroit Tigers and captain Robinson Cano in the AL power lineup.
The National League participants are David Wright of the New York Mets, Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer of the Colorado Rockies and Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals.
The 27-year-old Cespees is the fourth player in history to compete in the Derby without being named to the All-Star roster. The last was Ryan Howard, the defending champion from the Philadelphia Phillies, in 2007.
The Cuban native Cespedes is also the first Oakland player in the contest since Jason Giambi in 2001.
This season, Cespedes has hit 15 home runs but is batting only .223 and has struck out 79 times in 74 games. As a rookie in 2012, he had 23 homers.
The Home Run Derby is set for Monday night and the All-Star Game follows on July 16.
