Cardinals taking it slow with Furcal

The Cardinals aren't ready to let shortstop Rafael Furcal return to the field.
Furcal, nursing bone chips in the right elbow where he suffered a torn ligament last Aug. 30, said he was ready to go in the field by March 1 but manager Mike Matheny was being a bit more cautious.
"We'll keep talking," said Matheny. "I always love hearing what the guys have to say. But it means more to me what our medical guys have to say. We're going to err on the side of caution."
Matheny said he understood that the organization, media and fans alike were waiting for Furcal to make the long, clothesline-type throw from the hole.
But Matheny said, "I'm not so concerned with that right now. I've seen do some drills where he's gone to the backhand . . . and had plenty on (the throw). His arm is so strong that he can get by with it. But I want him to be confident. I don't want him to feel like he's getting in a position where he's put himself in a compromised spot."
