Veteran Ronny Cedeno was released Tuesday by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Cedeno, 30, signed a $1.15 million contract over the winter, and had been competing for a bench spot after batting .259 in 166 at-bats with the New York Mets in 2012.
The Cardinals have opted to start Pete Kozma at shortstop with Rafael Furcal out for the season. Matt Carpenter will likely start at second base and Daniel Descalso will back up both middle infield spots. This opens up a spot Matt Adams as a lefty bat off the bench.
