A lower back strain has landed St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list. The Cardinals announced the move Friday afternoon and called up Carlos Martinez to take Westbrook's spot on the roster.
The 35-year-old right-hander has struggled lately, going 0-4 with a 9.69 ERA in his past five appearances. For the season, Westbrook is 7-8 with a 4.49 ERA. He has more walks (49) than strikeouts (43) this season.
Left-handed Tyler Lyons will take Westbrook's spot in the rotation.
Martinez, one of St. Louis' top prospects, will replace Lyons in the Cardinals bullpen. The 21-year-old Martinez has appeared in 11 games this season for the Cardinals and has a 6.19 ERA.
Lyons is 2-4 with a 5.09 ERA this season.
