Cardinals Bethel Takes A Pay Cut

From 2013 to 2015, Arizona cornerback Justin Bethel made two All-Pro teams and three Pro Bowl rosters. But a transition to a bigger role in Arizona hasn’t gone as planned. In fact, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians referred to the shift of giving Bethel more time in the secondary a “failure in progress.”

Some have pointed to his lack of success on defense last year to his making less money than he is scheduled to make in 2017. He has taken a pay cut from $4.5 million to $2 million for the upcoming season. Should his play yield a better performance, Bethel can earn some of it back sooner than expected.

The cornerback was signed through the 2018 season, but the reworking of his contract has eliminated that year, making him a free agent after this season.

Rucker Re-Ups With Arizona

Frostee Rucker has signed a one year deal with Arizona. Rucker, who was hampered with injuries for the better part of the 2016 season, earned some justified praise for his veteran leadership and toughness when playing through some of those injuries.

Rucker, who failed to get a sack for the first time since 2007, has been considered one of the more important players in the Cardinals locker room for his leadership and team presence on and off the field.

Arizona is stop number three for the former third round pick from USC. He’s has 229 tackles, 20 sacks and eight forced fumbles during his career.

Cards Sign Kicker Dawson

One signing being hailed as “significant” in Arizona is that of kicker Phil Dawson.

Why so “significant?” because Arizona fans will remember that Chandler Catanzaro missed three critical kicks that could have helped Arizona get into the playoffs. A kicker like Dawson, who has made his fair share of pressure kicks over an 18 year season, could help the Cards win some games late, and maybe help this team get back into postseason play.
