St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig has been out since Sept. 4 with a foot injury and he won't be back in time to play in the National League Division Series next week, general manager John Mozeliak said Friday afternoon, according to
Craig has a Lisfranc injury involving a metatarsal bone, according to Mozeliak, and the team fears it will get worse if he tries to play through it.
Craig's status for the remainder of the postseason, should the Cardinals advance, remains unclear.
Matt Adams has hit eight home runs in September as Craig's replacement, and Adams is hitting .285 with 17 homers for the season. Craig is hitting .315 with 13 homers this year, but he has a reputation as an outstanding clutch hitter and is a better defensive first baseman than Adams.
Adams may remain in the Cardinals' lineup for the rest of the Cardinals' postseason run.
