The St. Louis Cardinals acquired right-handed relief pitcher John Axford from the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday for a player to be named later.
Axford is expected to join his new team for Friday night's game at the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Axford, 30, is 6-7 this season with a 4.45 ERA in 62 games.
The former closer has no saves this year. He led the National League with 46 saves in 2011 when the Brewers won the Central Division title.
"John is a reliever that offers experience as both a setup man and closer," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement. "He's also a pitcher who brings familiarity with the N.L. Central, pennant race baseball and the postseason."
Over his career, Axford is 21-19 with a 3.35 ERA.
