After Car Crash, Colorado Father Allegedly Tells Cops, 'I Was Trying to Kill My Son'

A Colorado father faces attempted murder charges after allegedly telling investigators he purposely crashed his car trying to kill his 2-year-old son, PEOPLE confirms.

The August 21 crash in the town of Centennial left Nathan Weitzel's son confined to a small body cast, as he recovers from a broken leg, a concussion and a large forehead wound that required about 20 stitches to close.

According to affidavits obtained by PEOPLE, Weitzel, who is 29, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and child abuse resulting in serious bodily injuries. He has yet to enter a plea and information regarding his attorney was not available Tuesday morning.

The affidavit says Weitzel told investigators he got his car up to about 75 miles per hour before deliberately steering straight into a parked vehicle.

He allegedly told investigators, "I was trying to kill my son. I did it on purpose."

Under questioning, Weitzel allegedly said he wanted his son dead because he couldn't handle the responsibilities of fatherhood, the affidavit contends.

Weitzel allegedly told police he brought the 2-year-old to a park, where he began planning the crash. The affidavit alleges he later he drove around for several minutes looking for the perfect place to crash the car.

According to KDVR, police allege Weitzel fought responding firefighters who tried to prevent him from slitting his throat with a piece of glass.

The young boy has been released from the hospital and is in his mother's custody, police tell PEOPLE.
