Bulletin: Giants 2, Tigers 0 after 5 innings
DETROIT -- Ryan Vogelsong kept the red-hot Giants rolling through the five innings of the Game 4 of the World Series on Saturday night, holding the Detroit Tigers scoreless in helping San Francisco take a 2-0 lead at Comerica Park.
The Giants have won the first two games in the best-of-seven series. No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a World Series.
Vogelsong gave up five innings but got the Tigers to hit into inning-ending double plays in the first and third innings with runners on first and second. Also, he induced American League Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera to pop out with the bases loaded to end the fifth. Prince Fielder hit into the double play in the first and Quintin Berry killed the third-inning rally.
Vogelsong was 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in his first three postseason starts and had gone 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA in his last six overall starts.
The Giants have won five consecutive games, dating to Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, and outscored their opponents 30-4 in that span.
The Giants also have three shutouts during the streak. The postseason record is four, held by three teams, two of them Giants -- the 1905 New York club and 2010 San Francisco club. The 1998 New York Yankees also have a share of the record.
The Giants scored two runs in the second inning off Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez, who was 2-0 with a 0.94 ERA in his last four overall starts, including going 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA in two starts in the postseason.
Hunter Pence drew a four-pitch walk to start the second, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Gregor Blanco's triple to deep center field. Brandon Crawford blooped a two-out single to center to drive in Blanco.
Except for that inning, Sanchez pitched well, striking out seven in five innings. He allowed four hits and his only walk was the one to Pence.
Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval hit in his ninth consecutive game with a first-inning single. He is 15-for-35 (.400) during the streak.
Game 4 is set for Sunday at 8:15 p.m. ET with Matt Cain pitching for San Francisco against Max Scherzer.
