The starting quarterback position with the Buffalo Bills is set for this season and hopefully many more to come. Tyrod Taylor is the man at the quarterback position for the Buffalo Bills, something that will not change. However, despite this locked in atmosphere at the starting position, there is a quarterback battle brewing in Buffalo.

Backup signal callers EJ Manuel and Cardale Jones have been battling all preseason long to win the team’s second string position, something both dearly covet considering a recent trend in the NFL revolving around backup quarterbacks. In fact, for one of these men, losing this battle could see them miss out on a roster spot entirely.

As far as the recent NFL trend goes, it is pretty simple and straightforward. Started out by the New England Patriots, some NFL teams nowadays are only keeping two quarterbacks on their roster entering the regular season while retaining third stringers on the practice squad for the duration of the season.

While I have my doubts that Cardale Jones could find himself sent onto the practice squad given his talent and potential ceiling. Add to that, that Jones was a draft pick and has been performing pretty well for an extremely well prospect thus far this preseason and Jones is almost a lock for a roster spot.

EJ Manuel on the other hand is not safe at all in the Bills current setup. Drafted in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, Manuel has yet to impress in the NFL. In fact, the Bills already declined his option for 2017 meaning that this year is his last under contract with the Buffalo Bills.

Now I don’t know about you, but if Manuel is already in his last year of his rookie deal, it won’t be that hard of a decision to cut him should he not perform at the level expected of a backup. With Jones breathing down his neck and also being much more talented in almost every area, Manuel’s time in Buffalo could be coming to an end.

Playing well over the course of the next two weeks is the only hope Manuel has of remaining on the Bills roster this season. However, should Jones continue to play at a solid level, the Bills coaching staff could be hard pressed to keep Manuel over another borderline position player.
