Bucs looking for Carimi to provide competition, maybe more
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers believe Gabe Carimi will provide depth for them at right tackle and could potentially be a starter after acquiring him via trade from the Chicago Bears.
“I think it provides competition, which is our favorite word,” general manager Mark Dominik said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “It provides competition at right tackle. No doubt about it. It also adds a lot of depth to our team and provides a guy who can play inside at guard, which he did last year. It gives you incredible depth.”
The Bucs picked up the former first-round draft pick in exchange for a 2014 sixth-round pick. He had not participated in the Bears’ voluntary offseason program and that lack of commitment to Marc Trestman and his new coaching staff made him available. Carimi suffered a serious knee injury in Week 2 of his 2011 rookie season and the Bucs hope he’s in better shape this season than he was a year ago.
“You almost have to look at last year as his rookie year,” Dominik said. “He missed a lot of chances to grow and develop. (The injury) did wear on him. You could see he was not 100 percent. I think they ended up having to sit him. You could tell it affected him. There’s games where you could see what you want to see, but then there’s also games where you say, ‘Oh, boy.’”
