Browns trade former first-rounder Justin Gilbert to rival Steelers

The Cleveland Browns continue to swab the decks of the previous regime’s mistakes. And they’re even willing to trade a once-valuable asset within the division to do so.

The perpetually rebuilding Browns reportedly will send 2014 first-round pick Justin Gilbert, who never worked out in Cleveland, to the rival Pittsburgh Steelers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Browns receive a sixth-round pick in 2018.

The move fits the approach of both teams this year. The Browns are continuing to shed skin and dump former high-round picks and high-dollar contracts. The Super Bowl-contender Steelers are seeking defensive upgrades, especially in the secondary.

Trades between these teams are very rare. Prior to a 2014 draft trade between the Browns and Steelers, they had not made a deal since 1968.

The Browns made eight first-round picks between 2009 and 2014. Only one — cornerback Joe Haden — remains on the roster. Last week, the Browns dumped Barkevious Mingo to the New England Patriots for a low-round pick.

Gilbert started three games in two seasons for the Browns. He has one interception in 23 career games, which he returned for a touchdown as a rookie. He also has kick-return value, running back 12 last season for a 28.3-yard average. Clearly, the Browns don’t appear too concerned trading him within the AFC North.

The Steelers were looking at heading into the season with very little experience at corner beyond William Gay. First-round pick Artie Burns has been injury-plagued during the preseason and might not be ready to start right now.
