Brett Favre says return to Packers — as a coach or GM — has crossed his mind
After tears and heartache and retirements and un-retirements, Brett Favre says he’s thought about another return to the NFL. This time, though, it’s as a front office executive or coach, he said on Thursday.
“That stuff has crossed my mind,” the Green Bay Packers legend admitted during an interview on ESPN Wisconsin’s Wilde & Tausch radio show. He also compared being a general manager to being a coach, something he does have some experience with. Following his final retirement from the game in early 2011, Favre returned to his home state of Mississippi and served as the offensive coordinator for Oak Grove High School. The team won the 6A state championship in Favre’s first season on the staff.
Obviously coaching high school football and managing an NFL franchise are very different, but Favre can draw inspiration from another Hall of Fame QB: John Elway. The longtime Denver Broncos signal caller has been the franchise’s GM since 2011. Additionally, former Green Bay Packers great Bart Starr served as head coach for the team for nearly a decade.
Favre’s split from the Packers wasn’t a pretty one, and the team eventually traded him to the New York Jets ahead of the 2008 season. He played that entire season and then two more years with the Packers’ NFC North rival Minnesota Vikings before calling it quits for good. But all has been forgiven between Favre and Packers faithful. Fans turned out in droves for Favre’s Hall of Fame induction, and they greeted him warmly at his jersey retirement ceremony.
Favre added he wouldn’t return in any sort of role before his youngest daughter, Breleigh, completes her college volleyball career at Southern Mississippi. She’ll be a freshman this year, putting any sort of return to the game at least four years away.
