The Atlanta Braves placed infielder Blake DeWitt on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a lower back strain and recalled right-hander David Carpenter from Triple-A Gwinnett, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.
Carpenter, 27, has pitched in 68 major league games in the past two seasons with the Astros and Blue Jays. He went 1-3 with a 2.98 ERA in 34 games in 2011, including one save. He had a 6.07 ERA in 30 games for the Astros last year before getting traded to Toronto. Last October Toronto traded Carpenter to Boston in the deal that included manager John Farrell. The Braves claimed him off waivers on Nov. 30.
DeWitt had been with the Braves since Freddie Freeman went on the disabled list two weeks ago with a strained oblique. Freeman is set to rejoin the Braves on Monday.
