EDMONTON, Alberta -- The St. Louis Blues extended the Edmonton Oilers' season-long losing streak to six games with a 6-0 victory on Saturday night.
The Oilers kept it close, trailing 2-0 through 40 minutes, before the Blues flexed their muscles in the third period, scoring four straight goals.
Right winger Chris Stewart had a hat trick for the Blues. He has scored eight goals in the last six games.
The Oilers were shut out for the sixth time this season and the third time in the last five games.
In what has become a typical scenario, the Oilers turned in a solid first period (outshooting the Blues 14-5) but trailed 1-0.
Blues center Patrik Berglund stepped out of the penalty box in the first period to create a two-on-one while half of the Oilers' power play decided to head to the bench for a change, setting up Stewart's opening goal.
The momentum took a violent swing in the second period with St. Louis outshooting Edmonton 14-4 and expanding its lead to 2-0 on a beautiful connect-the-dots play that consisted of five tape-to-tape passes as left winger Brenden Morrow, Stewart and center Derek Roy danced through Oilers defensemen Jeff Petry and Anton Belov at 5:50.
The Blues poured it on in the third period, with Stewart making it 4-0 at 1:46, left winger Jaden Schwartz making it 4-0 at 2:38, Stewart completing the hat-trick goal to make it 5-0 at 7:27 and Berglund making it 6-0 at 12:42.
The fans at Rexall Place booed the Oilers off their ice when the final horn sounded.
