The San Jose Sharks were expected to trade Ryane Clowe, but instead they sent center Michel Handzus to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick, ESPN's Pierre LeBrun reported Monday.
Handzus, 36, played for Chicago in 2006-2007, but played just eight games for the Blackhawks before tearing his anterior-cruciate ligament.
He has one goal and one assist in 28 games for the Sharks this season. But he has won 55 percent of his faceoffs this year. He's also effective in shootouts, having scored three times in seven shootout attempts.
The Blackhawks also reassigned forward Brandon Bollig to the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League.
