The Buffalo Bills are looking into a recorded phone call between general manager Buddy Nix and Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik that came as the result of a prank phone call.
The conversation was posted on and a number of social media sites, and included a number of topics, including free agency, the team's respective trade discussions and the status of Bills' quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
"We are aware of the report on Deadspin involving a phone conversation with Bills GM Buddy Nix," the Bills said in a statement. "We have made the league aware of the report and are reviewing it with legal counsel."
According to Deadspin, the pranksters originally called Nix's office claiming to be Dominik, then hung up immediately when the call was put through and Nix answered. Nix returned the call repeatedly, looking to speak with Dominik. In the meantime, the pranksters called Dominick's office pretending to be Nix.
At this particular moment, Nix called the pranksters, and was conferenced with the Bucs GM through the pranksters' cell phone. The two GMs were then placed on a speaker phone and recorded with a different cell phone.
During the six-minute call, Nix said about Fitzpatrick: "We're still struggling here with our quarterback. I say struggling. We're not really struggling. He's going to have to do something, or we'll have to."
He added: "You can't afford to pay that kind of money to a guy that's fighting for probably a backup job," then ended with, "we gotta get one somehow. Bad time to need it."
Fitzpatrick is due a $3 million bonus on the second day of the NFL's league year, which begins Tuesday.
