Bills hire Crossman as special team coordinator
After three years as the Detroit Lions' special teams coordinator, Danny Crossman will take on the same role with the Buffalo Bills.
Crossman wasn't retained by the Lions after the team made an unwanted piece of special teams history in September. Detroit gave up a both kick return and a touchdown return for touchdowns consecutive games, something that hadn't happened in the NFL in more than 60 years.
The Titans' Tommie Campbell had a 65-yard punt return for a score, and Darius Reynaud added a 105-yard kick return for a touchdown in Tennessee's 44-41, overtime win over Detroit on Sept. 23.
The following week, Minnesota's Percy Harvin took the opening kickoff 105 yards for a TD, and Marcus Sherels went 77 yards to score on a punt return in the Vikings' 20-13 win over the Lions.
Prior to his time in Detroit, Crossman worked for seven years on the staff of the Carolina Panthers, including 2005-09 as the special teams coordinator. He previously had a decade of experience as an assistant coach in the college ranks, including stints at Michigan State and Georgia Tech. He also worked at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he was on the same staff as new Bills head coach Doug Marrone.
"Really we have come from the bottom up through this industry," Marrone said, according to BuffaloBills.com. "We have stayed close and we have come to this point where we can work together again. He brings great enthusiasm to the room and he brings experience."
