St. Louis Cardinals right fielder Carlos Beltran tested his sore ribs before Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday night and was penciled into the lineup by manager Mike Matheny.
Beltran was scheduled to bat second in the order against the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park.
"First, you have to get medical clearance and it seems like things are leaning in that direction," Matheny said several hours before the first pitch. "But a lot of it is going to be how much he can tolerate and if it starts to affect the way he can do his job."
Beltran hurt his ribs when he took a home run away from Boston's David Ortiz with a catch at the wall in Game 1 on Wednesday night. He left the game and was taken to a hospital for X-rays, which were negative.
If Beltran is unable to play, the Cardinals likely would move Shane Robinson to right and put John Jay in center field.
The Cardinals made a lineup change before Game 2 at shortstop, starting Daniel Descalso instead of Pete Kozma. In Game 1, Kozma made two errors that resulted in two unearned runs.
