BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech's football team has faced a national power this season, and it has faced one of the worst teams in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision. Now it squares off against a new kind of opponent -- one that it should beat but is dangerous enough to pull off an upset.
The Hokies head to Greenville, N.C., to take on East Carolina on Saturday. The Pirates and their Air Raid offense have put up some crazy numbers through the first two games of the season, and they are ready for the challenge of playing Virginia Tech.
The Hokies, on the other hand, know they need a more complete performance to avoid a letdown.
"If we continue to get better, our goal is to be good by Georgia Tech. With as many young guys as we've got and so forth, I think that's the way it needs to go," Tech coach Frank Beamer said.
Tech's offense showed signs of progress, and its defense was dominant yet again in a blowout win over Western Carolina on Saturday. Special-teams play was better, though a miscue in the kicking game led to the Catamounts' only points.
The Hokies' last two trips to Greenville have resulted in close games, and Beamer has been talking to his players this week to let them know just how tough a challenge this game could be.
"East Carolina has got a lot of stuff going for it. I mean a lot of good stuff," Beamer said. "They're a good football team, extremely well-coached, scoring points, completing passes with a solid running game to go with it. It's a tough, tough game for us."
