Barry Zito has made another comeback, but this one has nothing to do with baseball. The former Oakland Athletics Cy Young winner always showed an interest in music during his baseball career. Now that his playing days are done, Zito has reinvented himself as a … country singer.
Zito debuted his single, “Secret of Life,” on his Youtube page Tuesday. How does he sound? Well, take a listen.
So, uh, not bad, right? It’s definitely strange to see Zito as a serious recording artist after watching him take the mound for 15 seasons. It’s also somewhat surprising that he chose country music, though he’s actually hinted at that career path in the path.
During his final season in baseball, Zito spent most of the year with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds. When he was with the club, Zito told the Tennessean he had plans to take up songwriting once his baseball career was over.
In that article, Zito talks about his admiration for Nashville and its music scene. He also mentions returning to the city to work on writing country music.
“I started to love country music about four years ago,” he said. “And I think that’s the vein that I’d like to write in. After meeting people here, I see myself coming back to Nashville. My dream would be to work in my home in San Diego and collaborate writing music with folks here. I know there’s a direct flight from San Diego. I can see spending a lot of time here, working on getting music published and hanging out.”
Even with that knowledge, it’s still pretty jarring to see Zito take the next step in his career. Then again, Zito was known for throwing batters tremendous curves when he was in the majors. Maybe we all should have seen this coming.
