Barcelona captain Carles Puyol could miss up to eight weeks with a dislocated left elbow suffered in Tuesday's Champions League win over Benfica.
Puyol, 34, who had just returned from a hamstring issue, fell awkwardly when attacking a corner, and was removed on a stretcher. He returned to Barcelona with his teammates, then spent the night in a local hospital.
"The club captain will undergo conservative treatment and is expected to be out for about eight weeks," said a statement on www.fcbarcelona.com.
Before being released, Puyol thanked fans and medical personnel from his Twitter account.
"I want to thank everyone who looked after me in Portugal," he wrote. "I'll soon be back to my best again! Thank you for all your messages -- a big hug to all of you."
