A roundup of Atlanta Falcons roster cuts, plus notable 2014 NFL roster cuts from around the league.
We knew these cuts were coming today, and it makes sense, because now's not the time to keep players around unnecessarily. The Falcons play this Thursday, and they only need to keep the guys that will play this week. Jay Adams has the full list.
The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have waived defensive end
Theo Agnew, linebacker Brendan Daley, linebacker Darin Drakeford, safety Devonta Glover-Wright, wide receiver Julian Jones, quarterback Jeff Mathews, linebacker Walker May, running back Jerome Smith, wide receiver Tramaine Thompson, and tight end Brian Wozniak. The club also placed offensive lineman Mike Johnsonand linebacker Marquis Spruillon injured reserve, in addition to placing wide receiver Drew Davisand safety Zeke Mottaon the Physically Unable to Perform list, and released safety Tyrell Johnson.
There are some notables here. It appears Mike Johnson's injury was pretty serious, and you have to feel for the guy. He's only played in 18 games for the Falcons since 2010, the year they drafted him; not what you'd expect from a 3rd round draft pick. It's also interesting that the Falcons didn't move Zeke Motta to IR - it means they believe he can play this year, albeit in week 7, at the earliest. Other than that, no surprises.
