Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane continues to find ways to keep his small-market team relevant.
The subject of the book "Moneyball" shook off five mediocre seasons to win the American League West in 2012, with a 94-68 record. For his part, Beane was named The Sporting News' MLB Executive of the Year, as voted by his peers.
He received the award Wednesday at the GM meetings in Indian Wells, Ca. Beane received 31 votes, well ahead of the Washington Nationals' Mike Rizzo, who had 13.
Beane also won this award after the 1999 season.
