Arizona State 96, Maryland-Baltimore County 61

Guards Jahii Carson and Jermaine Marshall scored 19 points apiece, leading Arizona State to a 96-61 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County in a season opener at Wells Fargo Arena.

Five players scored in double figures for Arizona State. Guard Rodney Elliott and forward Malik Garner scored 12 points apiece for UMBC.

The Retrievers led 8-5 after guard Joey Getz made a jump shot with 16:27 to play in the opening half, but the Sun Devils soon took control. They mounted a 9-1 run to go up 21-12 with 11:18 to go and used a 12-0 run to take a 35-20 lead with 5:03 left in the half.

Arizona State led by as many as 19 points before taking a 45-28 lead into the locker room. The Sun Devils shot a sizzling 53.8 percent from the field and converted 13 of 17 free-throw attempts in the opening period while holding the Retrievers to 40 percent shooting.

The Sun Devils continued to pull away in the second half, going up 54-35 on back-to-back 3-pointers by forward Jonathan Gilling and Marshall. The Retrievers cut the deficit to 11 with 10:22 remaining, but Arizona State responded with a 15-0 run to take an insurmountable 75-49 lead with 7:30 to play.

The Sun Devils started an 18-0 run moments later and led by as many as 39 points in the final minutes.
