The Arizona Cardinals look to be taking their flirtation with drafting a quarterback to the next level, and they should. Without really needing to trade up in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Cardinals can make a pick with the 13th selection and do quite fine for themselves.

Some names Arizona fans can look forward to hearing from now until draft night include Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes from Texas Tech, and DeShone Kizer of Notre Dame.

As I’ve previously written, the conditions are ideal for the Cardinals to take that leap of faith, and Carson Palmer is the reason why.

Rare is the opportunity to have a predictable number one at quarterback, and allowing for a rookie quarterback to sit, watch, and learn. Even more fortunate is Palmer being on the record as being comfortable with a mentoring role, something not always found with an aging QB looking to keep his job.

The bottom line here is that the Cardinals may not be down this road again with such ideal conditions. How many times have we bore witness to the team drafting a quarterback who needs to be ready on opening day, and watching the inevitable struggles play out in real time. For those wondering about such a scenario, just look at the Los Angeles Rams and Jared Goff.

That reason alone should dictate the Cardinals not wasting this opportunity.

Carson Palmer is insurance in Arizona. Insurance that the organization can select a quarterback now and allow him some time to grow into the role. It’s a chance for them to learn, and most importantly, not be shackled with the failures rookie quarterbacks often endure when the game from zero to 120 in the blink of an eye.

The time is now for the Cardinals, becaue the timing may never be this good again.
