Jered Weaver took another step closer to returning to the Los Angeles Angels.
The right-hander made a rehab start Wednesday against Diamondbacks minor-leaguers at extended spring training in Arizona. Weaver, recovering from a broken bone in his left (non-throwing) arm, threw 5 2/3 innings and allowed one run while striking out nine. Of his 75 pitches, 62 strikes.
If he comes out of the outing OK, he could be activated from the disabled list early next week.
Weaver made just two starts this season before he was injured when he landed on his left arm while trying to dodge a line drive on April 7. He is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA on the year.
Last year, Weaver finished third in American League Cy Young Award voting. He led the league in wins while going 20-5 with a 2.80 ERA. He was an All-Star in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
