Alex Rodriguez will return to the New York Yankees' lineup for Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday night.
Rodriguez, who was benched for Game 5 of the AL Division Series, will bat sixth and play third base against the Detroit Tigers.
"If we want to make some noise, we need this guy to be Alex," manager Girardi told reporters.
Girardi had benched Rodriguez for the deciding game against Baltimore after the third baseman had gone 2-for-16 with nine strikeouts in the series. He had been 0-for-11 against right-handers, and the Yankees faced right-hander Jason Hammel in Game 5. Eric Chavez played third base and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in the Yankees' 3-1 win.
Girardi has put Rodriguez back in even though the Tigers will start right-hander Doug Fister on Saturday. Rodriguez is 1-for-9 with three strikeouts and four walks in his career against Fister.
"This is a guy that we really need to get going," Girardi said of Rodriguez. "This is a guy that, 2009, you think about what he did throughout the playoffs, I just believe in my heart that he's ready to go. I believe he's going to contribute. We're going to put him back in there."
