Alabama leads women's NCAA golf after one round

Alabama holds a two-stroke lead after Tuesday's first round of the women's NCAA golf championships at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.

The Tide's five players shot a combined 286, which is 2 under par, making Alabama the only team to shoot under par for the day.

Virginia is second at even par, followed by Duke at 1-over and North Carolina at 2-over.

No. 1-ranked UCLA is tied with Arizona for fifth at 4-over. Competition will continue each of the next three days, wrapping up on Friday. Twenty-four schools are competing for the team title.

Alabama, which is ranked No. 2 in the country, has never won a national title in this event, which was won last year by UCLA.

The top individual score on Tuesday was posted by Virginia's Portland Rosen, who shot a 6-under-par 66, one stroke better than Laura Gonzalez of Purdue and two strokes better than Catherine O'Donnell of North Carolina and Brooke Pancake of Alabama, both of whom shot 68.

Lindy Duncan of Duke, the nation's No. 1-ranked player, is tied for ninth at 2-under.
